Hot Heros, a leading light of contemporary Finnish jazz, have turned their focus to the timeless melodies of master folk fiddler Konsta Jylhä. The resulting album, Tähtisilmä, draws the listener into a world of profound questions and a strangely comforting melancholy.
“We selected melodies in minor keys for the album, and omitted sections of Jylhä’s songs that were in major keys. This ensured the atmosphere remained comforting and beautiful, yet shadowed. The somber mood of the pieces completely took hold of me,” says the band’s saxophonist, Sami Sippola.
On Tähtisilmä, Hot Heros have succeeded where many others lose their way: they have brought Konsta Jylhä’s compositions into the present day without forced modernity. These songs, rising from the Finnish folk tradition, resonate across decades and centuries.
Deepened by the rich, mournful tones of cellist Juho Kanervo, the group reimagines these beloved songs alongside a new original composition by bassist Ville Rauhala—a piece that stands naturally among Jylhä’s enduring classics.
“Tähtisilmä is both a true folk album and a true jazz album. It captures Hot Heros’ finest playing to date. Even for us, when we play the songs from the album, their significance feels stronger than anything else we have ever played,” Sippola explains.
